Electric Youth) sets the perfect backdrop for director Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film, Drive. I feel as though I’m reviewing the two together, because it’s as if the song was written for the movie, it fits that well! for those who haven’t seen the film, it’s an 80’s sounding almost noir action flick. There are some words you’d never expect to be strung together! Mr handsome, Ryan Gosling, is a hollywood stuntman/getaway driver/mechanic, who happens to get caught up in the family drama of his neighbour, the ever so lovely Carey Mulligan. Ryan Gosling becomes the hero for the lady across the hall, and if you push aside all the violence and mess, it’s a romance at heart.

Now to the music! The soundtrack for this film is flawless. Each track is what i’d describe as the heart of the film squished down and pushed through a synthesiser.
This particular song, “A Real Hero”, was originally released in 2010 on a five track ep, but on hearing it, you’d expect it to be something you’d find in your dad’s record collection. The banging synth line and ethereal vocals of Electric Youth’s front lady make for a perfect match that make you feel all nostalgic about something that never happened. The line “real human being” is repeated for the majority of the song, putting a big emphasis on the fact that this hero is, yes, a hero, but a real dude who acted out of common sense and human nature. It gives you that ‘fuck yeah I’m a hero because I did something right but who wouldn’t in a situation like this?’ vibe. It also dabbles in the ‘human beings are actually pretty awesome and kind hearted’ vibe, too. It might be ryan gosling’s perfect face sketched in my mind, but this song takes me to road warmed by the sun, and puts the ‘I just woke up windswept’ look in my hair. Extremely comforting, nostalgic, and catchy as hell, this song is definitely something great.

Situated in the upper level of Adelaide Arcade, Two-Bit Villains is a slice of kustom kulture and culinary heaven in the historic adelaide building.

Opened in mid-2011, Two-Bit Villains set out to fill a gap in affordable threads for lovers of kustom kulture, rockabilly and vintage inspired fashions, as well as giving folks the chance to try items on instead.

In March 2012 the Two-Bit Villains team moved from one side of the arcade to the other, expanding to add delectable eatables to their store.

Catering to a range of dietary needs, including vegan and gluten-free options, the Two-Bit Villains menu is always promising something new to eat. The seasoned fries are probably the best I’ve eaten…then there are the home-made sodas which are likely the tastiest beverages to have ever wet my whistle. You can have them on their own or as a float (or, if you like, spider) and if you’re not feeling like anything carbonated there are also milkshakes available.

Two-Bit Villains is definitely not the kind of place you want to only visit once (unless you can eat everything on the menu in one sitting…even then you’ll want to go back another day for more) and with an inviting atmosphere it’s easy to find yourself visiting again and again.

The mood of James Blake in his new record ‘Overgrown’ is a dark existentialist reality looking straight down the barrel of the nature we make for ourselves in our everyday life.

Blake breaks down barriers of artistic mediums within sound and film particularly in the tracks ‘retrograde’ and ‘overgrown.’ These two have film clips that create moments that are an overwhelming exploration of the rhythmical, almost primitive, self. Musically, the record has a strong thread of simplicity-combining Blake’s soulful voice, chill wave beats and an illustrative electronic soundscape, much like being pulled into the centre of a industrial machine. The films that have been created to support the record add another texture altogether using slow motion cinematography and dim lighting to represent the sense of disorientation in the face of a surreal world.

Like feeling a heavy pulse in the depths of your chest ‘Overgrown’ holds tight your attention while you face your own reality.

Ghosts, girls, ghouls, and all things creepy - for our heroes theme, we tried to aim for that which is inherently dark, yet friendly and comforting. Our favourite heroes are those that aren’t explicitly taken from comic books or dressed in lycra, but the more humble anti-heroes, the unexpected saviours cloaked in darkness. Inspired by the art and aesthetic of our first “hero figure” for vaein, Charlavail Effron, as well as movies like Casper and Corpse Bride, our models effectively communicated the haunting narrative of two girls and one boy that have been carried on through to the other side. Having spent years in purgatory, the girls have become so close that they are unfamiliar to the presence of anyone entering their wide open abandoned home, until skull boy joins them. His isolation and dejection is perfectly contrasted with the almost unsettling closeness of the two dead girls, who take it upon themselves to make him their new play thing.

This is the 2nd part in a two section story by Lucy Moffatt.

This is the 2nd part in a two section story by Lucy Moffatt.

hi-nu-roly:

The cut-up technique is an aleatory literary technique in which a text is cut up and rearranged to create a new text.

The concept can be traced to at least the Dadaists of the 1920s, but was popularized in the late 1950s and early 1960s by writer William S. Burroughs, and has since been used in a wide variety of contexts.

The cut-up and the closely associated fold-in are the two main techniques:

Cut-up is performed by taking a finished and fully linear text and cutting it in pieces with a few or single words on each piece. The resulting pieces are then rearranged into a new text.

Fold-in is the technique of taking two sheets of linear text (with the same linespacing), folding each sheet in half vertically and combining with the other, then reading across the resulting page.

I felt this was appropriate because two musicians I admire, thom yorke and david bowie, have used this form in the past. I took poems from richard siken, sylvia plath and bukowski and took them apart until they were unrecognisable, then rearranged them into something recogniseable to myself.

That a woman is not a sex kitten does not mean that she’s any less comfortable or empowered or any of that stuff. See above, re: not a homogenous demographic. Stop making sexiness a universal demand. Let some characters be unsexy. And for f*ck’s sake, please, please stop drawing women who are injured, or dead, or being tortured, or punching bad guys, in sex-kitten pin-up poses. That is bad visual storytelling, and it is INCREDIBLY creepy. Let women be heroes for the sake of heroism. Women don’t have to be damaged or traumatized to be strong, or to want to make a difference. Corollary: Dropping rape into a backstory is not a panacea for making a female character complex and gritty.

Imagine you have a daughter. Imagine the kind of women you’d like her to want to grow up to be. Write them. Write women you’d want to be friends — really good friends — with. Write women you’d get in arguments with. Write women you’d be legitimately scared of. Write women like your mom, like your aunts, like your wife, like your friends, like your nieces and nephews and daughters and bosses and friends. We are not aliens… This, too, goes back to “doing things.” A lot of the time, male characters act, and female characters are acted upon. Let female characters make difficult choices — and sometimes choose wrong — and have struggles and the same real victories. Because without those things, they’re not characters; they’re just window dressing.
”

-
Rachel Edidin talks about portraying female superhero characters at Comic Alliance

reblogging over here specifically for the mention of conflation of violence with sex. Seriously, drawing injured, dead, tortured, and abused women in “sexy” poses absolutely portrays violence as sexy, absolutely conflates sex and violence with each other to the point where they’re so intertwined it’s impossible to separate them. That’s utterly fucked up and actively contributes to rape culture by helping to create people who think that the abuse the met out is sexy and is therefore not rape when in reality it’s rape, it’s abuse, it’s assault, it’s just violence and nothing more.

Ok I’m sorry. I’ll try to make this interesting, I promise.

I first became conscious of David Bowie sometime in the 5th grade. My friend Michelle was like, totally in him. In fact, her taste in music and film was uncharacteristically developed for someone who had not yet reached their teen years. I definitely didn’t consider listening to anything outside of hilary duff, justin timberlake or old hanson CDs at this stage in my life. She was ALWAYS talking about him. I didn’t really understand the appeal at first. Here was this extremely eccentric, sexually deviant, multi-coloured man who believed he was an alien. It all seemed a bit too seventies to me. Michelle, on the other hand, thought he was incredible, would always reference his dance moves, would gush about his new record release (it was 2004) and giggle suggestively as she talked about the movie labyrinth, and his accompanying “bulge”.

It was when I first heard “heroes” that I began to get on her level.

I don’t know what exactly made it so appealing - maybe it was the sonic landscapes that swooped right through you as soon as the song started, maybe it was the self-assured, deep vocals, or maybe it was the hopeful romance of the lyrics. They were beautiful and wonderful but never saccharine or sickening to me, even as a child. I loved this track. It soon became one of my favourite songs and has remained so. It speaks of the future but it also speaks of the past. It encompasses everything that music should be about, to me.

As time went on, I stayed friends with Michelle and she was one of the few people who fully understood me inside and out, especially in my first uncertain years of high school. In my last year I was met with the news that she had taken her own life. Devastated, I fell into a period of emotional collapse. Here was this person with whom i felt “got me” and encouraged my weirder tendencies, even helping me to come to terms with parts of myself that noone else could touch, and she was gone. I felt that I had betrayed her by drifting from her in those last years. She was certainly one of my only heroes during an important growth of my life. It felt like listening to david bowie and other 70s and 80s music that she loved was the only way I could recall our friendship and the time we spent together.

“Heroes” by david bowie will always, always be the song that keeps my friend alive in my heart.
