Rem’s age is irrelevant. She’s a studier, an observer, an obsessive compulsive cleaner, a vegetarian and a writer in her own mind. Often mistaken for Macy Grey, she enjoys exploring the universe with Carl Sagan and being rolled up like sushi while watching Gilmore Girls. Rem is inspired by the weird and slightly off beat moments and people in life, channeling them into her personal style, art and writing. Her curiosity drives her to say yes to everyone and people are her favourite things. She believes in good energy and chai lattes. Check out her blog here.

(p.s. ignore the extremely badly made t-shirt, which is officially the first vaein shirt ever made…what can i say? i’m a total loser with too much time on my hands.)

hello, i am jonno. it was about maybe two months ago i talked to my friends stef and jonno (yep, same name) in regards to creating a zine. all of us had known each other via different social media and had experience in writing or blogging. we decided that we wanted to create a space where we could write and determine our own standards, basing it in the town we called home, adelaide.

i knew a lot of people who i thought would be a great addition. some of them were people who i hadn’t talked to at all, some of them were friends who i wanted to get to know better and a few of them were in fact my best friends. however, one thing that applied to all of these people was that they inspired me. there was a certain vibe about these people that i related to upon first talking to all of them and they all posessed a certain je ne sais quois which fitted the concept that i had in my head of the zine.

the first thing that was to be handled was the name. it was Claire who was the first to suggest a plethora of words to me, many of which i immediately thought went with the aesthetic. however, she noted that “vein” was most profound to her, and i agreed: upon sharing it with everyone else, we all thought that both “vein” and the word “vain” were interesting, yet simple.

it’s quite often that the concept of “being vain” and “vanity” is struck with a negative connotation. although being excessively proud of ones appearance may be a bit undesirable, i see nothing wrong with expressing yourself and taking pride in how you present yourself. by projecting every aspect of your personality in a bold way (even beyond fashion) can inspire other people to be confident and strong in their lives. i would like to reclaim the concept of being vain and reshape how people think of the word. similarly, the concept of veins and a blood connection was very striking when we were thinking of a name. with each of us individuals being veins, we will join and become one in a system of life. Vaein.

Vaein zine is about changing how we all see others as humans. It’s about embracing everyone for who they are, and accepting that noone is perfect. It’s about expressing yourself and even changing the way you see yourself to become the person you want to be. Vaein is about connectivity, and sharing, and learning, and joining together to create something great. As i’ve mentioned, all of us at vaein are very expressive, individualistic people who take pride in who we are, be it through our fashion sense, our skills as artists or writers, or our opinions. Vaein is about finding your own identity, and your own ideas, and sticking by them. Most importantly, Vaein is about being proud of them.

in the next week we’ll be introducing ourselves and sharing our stories. we will also be showcasing what we have to offer. i would like to welcome stef, jonno, ashlee, belinda, james, patrick, greg, andrea, nina, elliot, kym, claire, rem, patrick eustace and patrick mars, beau, debbie, harley, andrea, dimitra, gabi, sarah, beau and cordelia.

i do hope you enjoy.
